Safety and privacy on a language exchange app Is Speakblend safe?
Speakblend is a language exchange app for practicing languages and making friends, not for dating. Its community guidelines say so. You can report or block anyone from their profile or from your chat. Automated moderation checks messages, posts, comments and profile text, and every photo is checked for nudity before it is stored. No app can promise that everyone you meet will be kind, so this page explains what Speakblend does and what you control.
At a glance
- Built for language practice and friendship, not dating
- 18 or older to sign up
- Report and block from any profile, chat or post
- Automated moderation of messages, posts, comments and profile text
- Every photo checked for nudity before it is stored
- Privacy controls you can turn on at any time
You choose who you answer
On Swipe, a like is one-way. When someone likes you, the like waits in your pending likes, and you decide whether to open a chat.
People can also start a chat with you directly, without a like from you, but you never have to reply, and blocking them takes one tap.
You also choose who you see. Filter suggestions by the languages people speak, their nationality, their gender and their distance: nearby, regional or worldwide.
Want a break from new people? Pause visibility takes you out of Swipe, Active learners and search for 24 hours, 3 days, 1 week, or until you turn it back on. Your existing chats, followers and posts keep working while you are paused.
What Speakblend checks automatically
Messages
Text messages are checked as they are sent. A message that breaks the rules is not delivered, and the sender’s account is reviewed with the help of AI, in the context of the conversation. Accounts found to be abusive are banned.
Posts and comments
A post or comment that fails the check is not published, and the author’s account is hidden from others until the Speakblend team has reviewed it.
Profiles
Names, usernames and bios are checked when you save them. Sexual or profane words, and contact details such as phone numbers, email addresses, links and messaging-app handles, are not allowed in them.
Photos
Every photo is checked for explicit nudity before it is stored. A photo that fails is rejected, and the account that uploaded it is banned.
Scams
Messages that look like a scam or a fake account start a review of the sender’s account.
Reports
Every report from members goes into the same moderation queue as the automatic flags.
We don’t publish the details of these checks, because that would make them easier to get around. Automated checks can’t catch everything, so your reports matter.
Report or block from any profile, chat or post
Report.
Open a profile, a chat’s details, a post’s menu or a group chat’s settings, and choose Report. Pick the reason that fits: spam, inappropriate content, offensive language, impersonation, harassment, violence or threats, misinformation (for posts), fake account (for profiles) or other. You can add details in your own words. Every report goes into Speakblend’s moderation queue, and after you report a person, the app offers to block them as well.
Reasons in the app
- Spam Commercial content or repetitive posts
- Inappropriate Content Content not suitable for the platform
- Offensive Language Hate speech or offensive language
- Impersonation Pretending to be someone else
- Harassment Bullying or harassment of others
- Violence or Threats Threatening violence or harmful content
- Misinformation False or misleading information
- Fake Account Account appears to be fake or bot
- Other Other reasons not listed above
Block.
Blocking works in both directions. Neither of you can message or call the other, and you stop showing up in each other’s lists and search. You can see everyone you have blocked, and unblock them, under Settings › Privacy & Visibility › View Blocked Users.
Flagged conversations.
If automated moderation catches an inappropriate message sent to you, the message is not delivered. The app tells you the conversation was flagged and offers to block the sender.
Built for language exchange, not dating
Speakblend’s community guidelines are in the app for everyone to read, under Settings › About Speakblend › Community Guidelines. They open with a safe and respectful environment for making friends and practicing languages, and they state: “Speakblend is not designed for dating or sexual relationships.”
The guidelines also prohibit:
- hate speech, harassment, personal attacks and degrading comments
- pornographic, violent or disturbing content, and nudity or obscene material
- sharing someone’s personal information or images without their permission
- spam and repetitive or unwanted messages
- fake accounts, fraudulent content and links, and anything meant to deceive people
What happens to someone who breaks them depends on how serious it is: a warning, a temporary suspension or a permanent ban, and content and accounts that break the rules can be removed. Serious violations, such as uploading explicit images, lead straight to a permanent ban. Members who believe a ban was a mistake can appeal from the app.

Adults only
You must be 18 or older to create a Speakblend account. Sign-up asks for your date of birth, and anyone under 18 is refused. Speakblend does not check identity documents, so if someone seems to be under 18, report them with the reason “Other” and tell us why.
Tips for a safe language exchange
- Keep your first conversations inside Speakblend, where reporting and blocking work.
- Don’t share your phone number, home address, workplace or exact location until you trust someone. You can hide your exact location in Settings.
- Never send money, gift cards or sign-in codes to someone you met online, whatever the story.
- Before you swap other contacts, a voice call inside the app is a good way to get to know someone.
- If you meet in person, choose a public place, tell a friend where you will be, and leave whenever you feel uncomfortable.
- If someone pushes for dating, sexual content or photos, block and report them.
- Never share your password or a verification code, even with someone who says they work for Speakblend.
- If something looks wrong with your account, open Devices & sessions and sign out of all other devices.
Safety questions
Is Speakblend a dating app?
No. Speakblend is for language practice and friendship. Its community guidelines say it “is not designed for dating or sexual relationships”, and they ban sexual content and nudity. If someone pushes for dating or sexual content, block and report them.
How old do you have to be to use Speakblend?
18 or older. Sign-up asks for your date of birth and refuses anyone under 18.
Can someone message me without my permission?
People can start a chat with you directly, without a like from you, but you never have to reply. You can block anyone with one tap, and Pause visibility keeps you out of Swipe, Active learners and search for as long as you choose.
What happens when I block someone?
Blocking works both ways: neither of you can message or call the other, and you stop showing up in each other’s lists and search. You can unblock them later under Settings › Privacy & Visibility › View Blocked Users.
What happens after I report someone?
Your report goes into Speakblend’s moderation queue with the reason and details you gave. Depending on how serious the problem is, the outcome can be a warning, a temporary suspension or a permanent ban, and content that breaks the rules can be removed. The app also offers to block the person you reported.
Does Speakblend verify profiles?
No. Speakblend does not check identity documents, so a profile can’t prove who someone is. Follow the tips on this page, and report anything suspicious with the “Fake account” or “Impersonation” reason.
Does Speakblend have video calls?
No. Calls on Speakblend are voice only. There is no video calling, so nobody sees you on camera.
Can I hide my location?
Yes. Turn on Hide exact location under Settings › Privacy & Visibility: others see your home country instead of your current location, and you don’t appear on your friends’ Friends Map. Location permission is optional, and the core features work without it.
Can I take a break without deleting my account?
Yes. Pause visibility takes you out of Swipe, Active learners and search while your chats keep working. Freeze account goes further: your profile and posts are hidden from everyone, notifications stop, and you are signed out on every device until you sign in again.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Settings › Account & Security › Delete your data and account. Deletion is permanent and can’t be undone. For other data requests, email [email protected].
Questions about safety or your account?
Contact us in the app under Settings › Help & Support, or email [email protected]. For privacy and data requests, email [email protected]. You can also read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
