Calls: voice only, or voice and video
Calls are voice or video.1voice only.
This is the clearest difference. Speakblend has voice calls only. A call is audio, so you can practice speaking and listening without being on camera. There are no video calls in Speakblend.
HelloTalk lets you chat with partners “through text, voice, or video”1, and its help pages show how to start a voice or video call from the chat toolbar16. HelloTalk also offers subtitles during voice calls, paid with its in-app currency, HT coins17.
If seeing your partner’s face matters to you, HelloTalk covers that and Speakblend does not. If you would rather talk without a camera, both apps have voice calls. In Speakblend, a 3-minute voice call also upgrades your Passport stamp with that person to Silver (more on the Passport below).
Translation in chat
On a free account, translation is limited to 10 a day.3part of the app.
Both apps translate messages. The difference is how much you get on a free account.
In Speakblend you can translate any message from the message menu, switch on Auto Translate for a whole chat, or translate your own draft before you send it. Translation covers 130+ languages, and posts in the feed are translated automatically into 40 languages. Translation is part of the free app; Speakblend MAX adds unlimited quality translations.
HelloTalk’s translation tools go further in some ways. Its translation page describes explanations of idioms and grammar, voice translation and camera translation for signs and menus19. On a free account, HelloTalk counts every translation: “Free members are limited to 10 translations per day, VIP members have unlimited translations,” and the limit “applies to all translations used in the app, including chatting, Moments, and anywhere else”3.
Corrections and other learning tools
HelloTalk is built around learning tools. Its home page lists “translation, pronunciation, transliteration, and corrections”1, and its chat page describes grammar correction with explanations2. HelloTalk also offers a set of separate AI apps (SpeakUp AI, HelloWords, AI Grammar, Talksy, Wordia and LanguageClass) that work with the same account15.
Speakblend does not correct messages, does not score pronunciation and has no transliteration, lessons or AI tutor. It is built for conversation: translation when you get stuck, voice messages you can replay at 0.5x to 2x, and ice-breaker prompts to start a chat. If you want a partner to mark up your sentences inside the app, HelloTalk is the better fit.
Finding a partner
You find partners by searching.1swiping.
A free account can write first to 10 new partners a day.5one person a day without a match.
The two apps find partners in different ways.
Speakblend shows suggestions you swipe through. You can filter by the language your partner speaks (up to three), nationality, gender and distance (nearby, regional or worldwide), and suggestions learn from the profiles you like. A like is one-way: the other person sees it and decides whether to accept, and accepting opens the chat. You can also start a chat without a match: 1 a day on a free account, 10 a day with MAX. Free accounts have a daily swipe limit; MAX makes swiping unlimited.
HelloTalk lets you “search for language partners by native language, city, and more”1. On a free account, search shows people whose languages match the ones you teach and learn; VIP members can search the whole community by language, country or region4. Free accounts can contact 10 new partners a day, and VIP members up to 255.
In short: HelloTalk lets a free account write to more new people each day. Speakblend asks the other person to accept a like first, apart from your daily chats without a match.
Feeds, games and keeping a friendship going
Games inside a chat: not stated on its site.five, played together.
A record of each friendship: not stated on its site.Passport stamps, Ink to Prism.
To talk in a group, there are live Voicerooms and Livestreams.1group chats, but no live rooms.
Both apps have a public feed. HelloTalk’s is called Moments, where you “share posts, ask questions, and get responses from native speakers”1. Speakblend’s global feed takes text, photos, voice notes and tags, and each post is translated automatically into 40 languages.
Speakblend puts more into keeping a conversation going once it starts:
- Chat games. You can play 5 games together inside a chat: Word Chain, Taboo, Truth or Dare, Pixel Blend and Blind Control. HelloTalk’s site does not describe chat games.
- Passport. Every friendship earns a stamp that levels up: Ink after 10 messages each, Silver after a 3-minute voice call or a finished game, Champagne after a 7-day chat streak, and Prism when you scan each other’s code in person.
- Friends Map. A 3D globe of the friends you follow who share their location.
HelloTalk’s group features are live: Voicerooms, where learners and native speakers talk about a topic, and Livestreams with hosts1. Speakblend has group chats but no live voice rooms or livestreams.
Safety and privacy controls
An age range for who can message you: you can set one.9not available.
Read receipts cannot currently be turned off.11can be hidden.
We describe our own tools here and link to HelloTalk’s own safety page rather than judging it6.
In Speakblend you can report and block anyone; a block covers both messages and calls. Messages, posts and comments go through automated text moderation, reports get an AI-assisted review, and adult images are blocked when they are uploaded. For privacy, you can hide your online status, last seen, typing indicator and read receipts, hide your exact location, pause your visibility, set quiet hours, hide notification content, freeze your account and see the devices signed in to it.
HelloTalk’s safety page describes “smart technology, human moderation, and community reporting”6. Its privacy settings include several that Speakblend does not have: you can choose the age range of people who can message you9 and block all chats from people you don’t know10. You can also hide your age, online status and location7 and turn on Hide from Search8. HelloTalk’s help page says read receipts cannot currently be turned off11.
Speakblend does not verify identities, so on any app, including ours, keep personal details private until you trust someone. Our safety page explains the tools step by step.
Price: what is free and what is paid
Both apps are free to download and use, with an optional subscription.

When Speakblend may suit you better
Speakblend may suit you better if you want:
- Practice without a camera. Calls are audio only.
- Translation in the free app for any message, a whole chat (Auto Translate) or your own draft before you send it.
- Games to play with a partner inside the chat (5 of them).
- A record of each friendship: Passport stamps that level up from Ink to Prism.
- Privacy switches for chat signals: hide typing, last seen and read receipts, plus quiet hours and pausing your visibility.
- New chats that start with a like the other person accepts, apart from your daily chat without a match.
- The app in your language: the interface comes in 19 languages.
Can you use both?
Yes. Nothing stops you from having both. One way to split them: use HelloTalk when you want corrections, video or a live room, and Speakblend for voice calls, games and long-running friendships you track in the Passport. The two apps have separate accounts, so your chats and contacts stay in the app where you made them.
