Calls: voice only, or voice and video
Calls are audio or video.1voice only.
Speakblend has voice calls only. A call is audio, so you can practice speaking and listening without being on camera. There are no video calls in Speakblend.
Tandem lets you “pick any way to talk: text, voice note, audio or video call”1. Its web app is for messaging: Tandem says the current Tandem Web “does not support calling” and asks you to use the mobile app for audio and video calls5.
If you want to see your partner while you talk, Tandem covers that and Speakblend does not. If you would rather talk without a camera, both apps have voice calls. In Speakblend, a 3-minute voice call also upgrades your Passport stamp with that person to Silver.
Translation in chat
Both apps translate messages.
In Speakblend you can translate any message from the message menu, switch on Auto Translate for a whole chat, or translate your own draft before you send it. Translation covers 130+ languages, and posts in the feed are translated automatically into 40 languages. Translation is part of the free app; Speakblend MAX adds unlimited quality translations.
Tandem’s store listing says its “in-app translation feature helps you compose a message or translate an incoming one”2. Tandem lists “unlimited translations” among its Tandem Pro features5. Its own pages do not say how many translations a free account gets, so we do not guess.
Corrections and other learning tools
Your messages can be corrected.2are not corrected.
An English certificate: from an in-app test, A2 to C1.6not available.
Tandem has learning tools that Speakblend does not. You can correct your partner’s messages and add comments2, in the app and in Tandem Web5. Tandem also offers English tests at four levels, A2, B1, B2 and C1, with a certificate you can download6.
Speakblend does not correct messages, does not score pronunciation and has no lessons, tests or AI tutor. It is built for conversation: translation when you get stuck, voice messages you can replay at 0.5x to 2x, and ice-breaker prompts to start a chat. If you want corrections or a certificate, Tandem is the better fit.
Joining and finding a partner
Before you join, every application is reviewed.1,3there is no application review.
You find partners by searching.1swiping.
This is where the two apps differ most before your first message.
Joining. Tandem reviews every application “to make sure that the Tandem community remains safe and fun for everyone”1. Its FAQ says each application is reviewed individually, which can take time, that some countries occasionally have a waitlist “to keep our community and languages balanced”, and that applications can be rejected if you are under 16 or have not used a real profile photo or name3. Speakblend has no application review or waitlist: you sign up, add a profile photo and can start swiping and chatting.
Finding partners. Tandem lets you “search by language, location, interests, and more”1. With Tandem Pro you can also travel a world map in search of partners and meet members near you4.
Speakblend shows suggestions you swipe through. You can filter by the language your partner speaks (up to three), nationality, gender and distance (nearby, regional or worldwide), and suggestions learn from the profiles you like. A like is one-way: the other person sees it and decides whether to accept, and accepting opens the chat. You can also start a chat without a match: 1 a day on a free account, 10 a day with MAX. Free accounts have a daily swipe limit; MAX makes swiping unlimited.
Feeds, games and keeping a friendship going
Games inside a chat: not stated on its site.1five, played together.
A record of each friendship: not stated on its site.Passport stamps, Ink to Prism.
To talk in a group, there are Parties, group audio spaces.2group chats, but no group audio.
On Tandem, members share topics with the community “so you can have meaningful conversations about what interests you”2, and Parties are group audio spaces for practicing together2. Speakblend has group chats but no group audio rooms.
Speakblend’s global feed takes text, photos, voice notes and tags, and each post is translated automatically into 40 languages. Speakblend also puts more into keeping a one-to-one conversation going:
- Chat games. You can play 5 games together inside a chat: Word Chain, Taboo, Truth or Dare, Pixel Blend and Blind Control. Tandem’s site does not describe chat games.
- Passport. Every friendship earns a stamp that levels up: Ink after 10 messages each, Silver after a 3-minute voice call or a finished game, Champagne after a 7-day chat streak, and Prism when you scan each other’s code in person.
- Friends Map. A 3D globe of the friends you follow who share their location.
Safety and privacy controls
When you report someone, a Community Safety team reviews it.3,7an AI-assisted review checks it.
Before you join, every application is reviewed.1,3there is no application review.
We describe our own tools here and link to Tandem’s own pages rather than judging them.
Tandem’s application review is part of how it keeps the community safe1. When you report someone, its Community Safety team reviews each report; members who broke the Community Guidelines are warned or banned, the reported member is not told who reported them, and you can appeal a decision7.
In Speakblend you can report and block anyone; a block covers both messages and calls. Messages, posts and comments go through automated text moderation, reports get an AI-assisted review, and adult images are blocked when they are uploaded. For privacy, you can hide your online status, last seen, typing indicator and read receipts, hide your exact location, pause your visibility, set quiet hours, hide notification content, freeze your account and see the devices signed in to it.
Speakblend does not review applications or verify identities, so keep personal details private until you trust someone, on any app. Our safety page explains the tools step by step.
Price: what is free and what is paid
Both apps are free to download, with an optional subscription.
- Speakblend MAX is a weekly, monthly or yearly subscription, and MAX passes can also be bought with SBC coins earned in the app. MAX adds, among other things, unlimited swiping, unlimited quality translations, 10 new chats a day without a match, voice-message transcription, profile-visitor notifications and up to 3 learning languages. A free Spotlight and 3 Auras every month come with the monthly and yearly plans only.
- Tandem Pro is sold as 1-, 3- and 12-month subscriptions3, and you can upgrade only in the mobile app4. Tandem names its Pro features as traveling a world map to find partners, meeting members near you and seeing who visited your profile4, plus unlimited translations5.
Prices differ by country and change, so check each app’s store page.

When Speakblend may suit you better
Speakblend may suit you better if you want:
- To start straight away, with no application review or waitlist.
- Practice without a camera. Calls are audio only.
- Translation in the free app for any message, a whole chat or your own draft before you send it, and feed posts translated automatically into 40 languages.
- Games to play with a partner inside the chat (5 of them).
- A record of each friendship: Passport stamps that level up from Ink to Prism.
- Privacy switches for chat signals: hide typing, last seen and read receipts, plus quiet hours and pausing your visibility.
- The app in your language: the interface comes in 19 languages.
Can you use both?
Yes. Nothing stops you from having both, and a waiting period on one app is a good time to try the other. One way to split them: use Tandem when you want corrections, video or a Party, and Speakblend for voice calls, games and friendships you track in the Passport. The apps have separate accounts.
